Galveston City Marshal was heading home when he spotted man suspected in slain Harris Co. constable deputy’s killing

GALVESTON, Texas – As KPRC 2 continues to learn more about the Harris County Pct. 4 Constable Deputy’s murder, we are learning more about how his accused killer was apprehended.

Sgt. Nicholas Yeley with Galveston City Marshals broke down how the arrest played out in an interview with KPRC 2 reporter Corley Peel noting first how descriptive the gunman’s vehicle was. From there, it was an all-hands-on-deck situation.

“They were very descriptive with it, which made it easy for us to be observant and vigilant,” he explained. “We were all being observant. We were all on the lookout. We wanted to find this person.”

Despite waiting for long, Sgt. Yeley said things seemed to look bleak and his shift was getting ready to be over.

“And throughout the day, we were watching and nothing,” he said. “I clocked out and was getting ready to head home and hopped in my personal car...and I was driving home talking to my dad.”

That’s when things took an unexpected turn and the sergeant had to cut that phone call with his father short.

“I just happened to look over and I said, ‘oh, dad, I gotta go. I’ll call you back’ and, there was the suspect’s car in a parking lot - he was pulling into the parking lot, and just by chance, I was in the right place at the right time,” Sgt. Yeley explained. “It was meant to be for me to find him and call the troops in.”

Because he was not in uniform, he was still able to act quickly and call for Galveston police to rush in and apprehend the suspect. When the suspect realized he had been spotted, he sped away in his vehicle, leading authorities on a short chase.

While in the area of the Causeway bridge, the suspect drove his vehicle into the water. He could be seen on Houston Transtar cameras swimming in the water before law enforcement brought a boat to pick him up.

Within minutes, however, officers were able to grab the gunman - which completely caught Sgt. Yeley off-guard given how long he’d been waiting and looking out for the gunman.

“It took a lot of heroes to do what they did,” he said. “And they need the recognition. I was just there at the right place to put them in the spot they needed to be. It’s a phenomenal feeling, don’t get me wrong, but those are the heroes that got him.”

Though Sgt. Yeley didn’t know Constable Deputy Husseini directly, they shared a kinship through law enforcement.

“We’re all brothers and sisters,” he said. “We’re a large community, but we love each other. And he’s extended family to all of us. That’s it. It hurts. We’re. We’re all there mourning with this family.”
