GALVESTON, Texas – The suspect in the killing of a Harris County Pct. 4 Deputy Constable has been moved from a Galveston hospital and booked into Galveston County Jail.
Galveston County Criminal District Attorney Jack Roady says Athir Murady is currently charged with evading arrest.
Now that Murady has been booked, Roady says the district attorney’s office will request he be denied bail.
Murady is accused in the shooting death of Harris County Pct. 4 Deputy Constable Maher Husseini. Husseini was sitting at a stoplight Tuesday at the intersection of Richmond Ave. and Fondren Rd. in his personal vehicle on his way to work when a gunman got out of his car, walked up, and began shooting into Husseini’s SUV.
After shooting at the deputy and running away, a Houston Police Department source said the gunman returned and shot Husseini again before leaving the scene.
Murady was captured after being spotted in Galveston by a city marshal. Murady fled once he realized he was spotted, leading law enforcement on a short chase.
In the area of the Causeway bridge, Murady drove his vehicle into Galveston Bay and got out of his car. He was swimming in the bay before a boat came by to pick him up.
The police K9 bit Murady while he was being taken into custody before being taken by ambulance to UTMB John Sealy Hospital under guard.
