Dashcam captures Harris County Corporal’s murder and ‘cordial’ conversation with killer

HOUSTON – Harris County Pct. 4 Corporal Maher Husseini had a dashcam in his personal vehicle that captured a conversation he had with the man who minutes later gunned him down at a red light, which was also recorded.

The probable cause document says Cpl. Husseini and the man charged with his murder, Athir Murady, first talked in a parking lot at 3300 South Gessner. That’s the same address listed on the website for Husseini’s private security company, Jaguar Protection. It’s about 1.3 miles from the murder scene.

Husseini was standing outside the back passenger side of his SUV with the door open when Murady walked up to him. The two “shake hands and have a cordial conversation” according to the document, and they spoke for several minutes.

The details of the conversation are not clear from the charging document.

Husseini got into his SUV and left the parking lot, turning onto Richmond Avenue.

Murady walked back to his car and followed Husseini through multiple intersections. Husseini was checking his rearview mirror as he drove.

Cpl. Husseini stopped at a red light at Richmond Ave. and Fondren Road.

Husseini’s dashcam video shows as he was stopped at the light, the suspect walked up from behind Husseini’s SUV, came up to the driver’s side window, and shot Husseini about four times. The dashcam video shows the corporal “slumped over the center console bleeding, and on the video, you see and hear about four more shots coming through the passenger side window” hitting Husseini in the head and face.

According to the document, the dashcam video clearly shows the suspect walk up to the SUV.

Investigators used a still shot from that video and compared it to Murady’s driver’s license photo, saying they believed it to be the same person.

The medical examiner said Husseini was shot a dozen times -- five times in the head and seven shots to his left shoulder and left chest area.

Witness account

Along with the corporal’s dashcam video, investigators also talked to a woman who witnessed the shooting.

She told police she came up to the red light at Richmond and Fondren and the suspect’s car was two lanes away from her. The woman told police she saw the driver get out of his car, walk around the front of her car and another vehicle before stopping at the driver’s side of Husseini’s SUV and shooting into it four times.

She said Murady made eye contact with her before getting back in his car, moving it to a nearby parking lot while the light was still red. He walked back to Husseini’s car and shot through the passenger window about four more times.

The woman said she did not see Husseini or the gunman have any sort of altercation. She described his weapon as a ‘big black gun.’
