Northside mosque remembers slain Harris County Pct. 4 corporal as praying man, protector

HOUSTON – Even though Harris County Precinct 4 Corporal Maher Husseini wasn’t a member of the Baitus Samee Mosque, we’re told he left a lasting impression there. Not only as someone who went there to pray but also as someone instrumental in protecting the holy space.

Following an ambush-style shooting Tuesday, Husseini is being remembered and praised for his faith and service.

“We don’t restrict people from one sect of Islam or another sect of Islam, so he really appreciated that,” said Nasir Malik, Public Affairs Director for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community - Houston Chapter.

Malik says Corporal Husseini was of a different sect of the Muslim religion, but that didn’t stop him from worshiping at this mosque that was close to his job.

“He’d often come and offer Friday prayer with us,” Malik said.

Not only does Malik remember Husseini as a praying man but also a protector. He says Husseini was sent here by the constable’s office on August 27th as detail for an anti-hate event following a graffiti vandalism incident about a week and a half earlier.

“You know we respect everyone who served our communities and especially these law enforcement people. They’re out and about putting their life at risk by protecting us and when someone takes their life, it’s painful,” Malik said.

Malik says the news of Husseini’s murder is especially tragic because it goes against everything the religion is about.

“Islam means peace.” Malik said.

Malik adds that he had never seen Corporal Husseini’s suspected killer, Athir Murady, at the mosque before, and he’s still in shock that this happened. He says he plans to pray for everyone involved.
