Help on the horizon for 86-year-old Acres Homes woman battling health issues in dilapidated home

HOUSTON – We’re following up on a story that touched so many of you.

Help may be on the way for Miss Earnestine Brown, the 86-year-old woman in Acres Homes battling multiple, serious health issues while living in a home that’s crumbling around her.

The home she’s been living in for the past five decades was once a safe haven but over the years it has turned into a dangerous place.

“She puts paper in the door because the door frames are misaligned,” said Sally Retzloff, a long-time friend. ”The whole house is listing. You walk and you fall this way. She came up the step the other day and she hit the ground and she laid in here for quite a while before she could get herself up. She used the chairs to get herself up but she really hurt herself.”

Feeling like she had nowhere else to turn, Miss Brown’s dear friend, Sally Retzloff, emailed the “Spencer Solves It” Team a few weeks ago to see about getting the 86-year-old the help she so desperately needs to make her home a place of safety, stability, and comfort once again.

“Miss Brown is a very charming individual, very welcoming.” After we brought her story to light, John Work, Director of Construction for The Restoration Team visited Miss Brown.

The Restoration Team is a local home repair and disaster response non-profit and one of KPRC 2′s community partners that fixes homes for Houstonians in need. He wanted to see her living conditions for himself.

“A walk-in shower would make such an improvement in her life. Just moving from room to room,” Work said. “Things we could with the entryways to make her life easier to get from her living space to the kitchen to the bathroom so that things like that are ADA compliant.”

Work and his team of volunteers believe they can make the necessary changes to improve Miss Brown’s quality of life but there’s one challenge left and that’s funding.

“We’re always accepting donations. You know the dollar speaks louder than anything else, said Trevor Barnett, The Restoration Team’s Executive Director. “The restorationrestorationteam.org There’s a little button you can sign up to be a monthly donor. That’s the best way to help us.”

For Miss Brown, there’s hope on the horizon as she waits. For Work and his team, the mission is clear, to make sure she can stay in the house she loves, safely. “A lot of people watch your show. We love for some to pick up the phone or go to their computer and go to our website to help Miss. Brown out. They can help Miss Brown directly with their funding,” Work said.
