Security beefed up at Sharpstown International School after lockdown and panic

HOUSTON – Security will be increased Monday at Sharpstown International School after a lockdown at the school Friday panicked parents.

Houston ISD police commander Darren McCall said about 200 parents came to the school to get their children this afternoon when administrators notified parents the school was under lockdown while they investigated a potential threat.

McCall said district police got a call from a student that another student had a gun at school.

HISD police and Houston police both went to the school. They searched inside and outside the school and did not find a gun, McCall said.

Parents were notified around 1 p.m. which prompted many to come straight to the campus on Triola Lane.

“As expected, with ensuring their safety, they wanted to come here and pick up their children,” McCall said.

“So we wanted to reassure the parents that their kids are safe and school will resume on Monday. We’ll have extra patrols out here to assure that the staff and the students are safe,” he said.

Sky 2 was over the scene around 2 p.m., which showed heavy police presence and a large crowd of parents at the front of the school.

McCall said there were no injuries, no gun found and no arrests made. He said the investigation is ongoing and any updates will go first to parents and then to the media.

Sharpstown International School is a magnet school for international studies for students in grades 6 through 12. It also has an International Baccalaureate World School program. The mission of that program, according to the school’s website, is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
