Harris County Pct. 4 deputies were already at the scene when HPD officials arrived, but they were not involved in the collision. The preliminary investigation does not show any evidence that the driver used their brakes before the crash, according to police.

Both victims, a male driver and female passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, and it is currently unknown why the vehicle left the roadway.

The highway was opening back up just after noon Sunday.
