HOUSTON – Frustration continues for some Houston-area families dealing with bus issues since the beginning of school. However, one grandmother might be getting their requests handled after KPRC 2 stepped in.
PREVIOUS REPORT: ‘Getting the runaround’: School bus problems persist for Houston area students
Last week, our Rilwan Balogun introduced us to Tammy Chavis, who takes her grandchildren to school each morning because their parents work overnights. She begins the day by picking up her grandchildren in the Acres Homes area, then drives roughly 12 miles to Gregory-Lincoln.
Chavis told us she repeatedly calls school officials at Houston ISD and those at the transportation office to try and resolve the problem but says she gets the runaround.
After our story last week, the district called her a day after to set up a bus route for Chavis’ grandchildren.
“Finally, someone said we will have someone to give you a call back and they actually did and after that next thing I knew they were saying we had a bus and a route and they will pick them up on Monday morning,” Chavis said. “It’s been a long month of just going back and forth between the transportation department and the school and so I’m just happy to finally be able to get them on the bus.”
CONTINUOUS COVERAGE ON TRANSPORTATION ISSUES
However, she said there was a miscommunication on Monday. The district told her the bus would meet them here at the front, we saw a bus around the corner - it waited less than 3 minutes- before it left. For that reason, she ended up driving her grandkids to school again.
Other families have reached out to us saying they’re having the same issues.
When we reached out to HISD, they told us parents of children, who have not been assigned a bus route and are eligible, should contact the school and it’ll be resolved within 10 days. We should note that’s the same thing they told us at the start of the school year. We expect to follow up with Chavis on Tuesday, to see if the issue has all been resolved.
