FILE - Police tape cordons off the scene of a crime in Levittown, Pa., Saturday, March 16, 2024. Police departments reported a year-over-year increase in sworn officers in 2023 for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began and since the 2020 police killing of George Floyd spurred nationwide protests and increased scrutiny of police, according to a survey released by the Police Executive Research Forum. A police officer in Galveston shot and wounded a man Sunday night after a short chase on foot.

Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening, officers with Galveston Police Department were alerted to a domestic disturbance at a mixed-used public housing campus. When authorities arrived at the scene, a person who was involved in the altercation told them that the man responsible for the assault was in the complex and likely armed.

Officers found the man in a nearby house, but he ran off before later being confronted at the corner of 53rd St. and Ball Ave. That was where an officer opened fire. Galveston officials have not confirmed whether or not the suspect pointed or fired a gun at the officers at the time of the shooting.

The officer who fired the shots is okay, GPD confirmed. The man who was shot by the officer was taken to a nearby emergency center, and his condition is unconfirmed at this time.

Per police protocol, the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office and the Texas Rangers will investigate the incident.
