Doctor breaks down air quality issues from Deer Park pipeline fire

HOUSTON – It’s another hot day in Houston with close to record breaking highs and triple-digit feels like temperatures.

While residents in Deer Park are dealing with the aftermath of the pipeline fire, making it difficult to breathe for some people, especially with another air quality alert.

Dr. Carlos from Vital from Vital Allergy & Asthma Center is already seeing patients having difficulties.

“I’ve already seen two patients with asthma and bronchitis. The particulate matter along with the rag weed—it’s an additive effect,” he said. “You want to use recycled air in your home and car, stay at least 200 feet if not more and stay inside.”

And for folks that don’t live near Deer Park but are experiencing red eyes, headaches, and scratchy throat—and having problems eating bananas—ragweed may be the issue.

“Bananas come from the ragweed family, and you may experience swollen or itchy throat,” Dr. Carlos said. “You want to get tested if you’re having problems, avoid being outside for long periods of time, take showers before bed and make sure to wash your pet once a week.”
