HOUSTON, Texas – The man accused of shooting a Harris County Precinct 4 Corporal made his first court appearance Monday.

Athir Murady has since been charged with evading arrest in Galveston County and murder in Harris County for the shooting death of Harris County Precinct 4 Cpl. Maher Husseini on Sept. 3.

Murady remains in the Harris County jail with no bond.

Kathryn Rogers, a prosecutor with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, said this was Murady’s first court appearance where she and his lawyer discussed the probable cause. Rogers added that Murray’s lawyer did not approach the bond issued Monday because she wasn’t ready.

Despite not being granted a bond, the judge in the case did go over bond conditions if Murady was to be granted a bond. She said the normal bond conditions would remain, including no passport, house arrest, and no internet.

“He’s a very dangerous person,” Rogers said. “We are going to do everything in our power to make sure that this family gets justice for what happened to their loved one.”

Murady is accused of shooting Husseini as he was sitting at a stoplight at the intersection of Richmond Avenue and Fondren Road. Husseini was in his personal vehicle on his way to work when Murady reportedly got out of his car, walked up, and began shooting into Husseini’s SUV.

After shooting at the deputy and running away, a Houston Police Department source said Murady returned and shot Husseini again before leaving the scene.

Murady was captured after being spotted in Galveston by a city marshal. Murady fled once he realized he was spotted, leading law enforcement on a short chase.

In the area of the Causeway bridge, Murady drove his vehicle into Galveston Bay and got out of his car. He was swimming in the bay before a boat came by to pick him up.

A police K9 bit Murady while he was being taken into custody before he was taken by ambulance to UTMB John Sealy Hospital under guard.

Murady’s next court appearance is scheduled for November.
