Body cam video shows Spring Branch ISD police officer saving life of choking baby

HOUSTON – The sounds of a baby’s cries pierced through an August night, captured on video. It happened a month ago Monday night.

“Not my favorite sound in the world, but at that moment he’s breathing. The baby is crying, it’s breathing,” said Spring Branch ISD Police Chief Larry Baimbridge.

The baby’s cries captured on body cam video after a choking incident happened outside of Cedar Brook Elementary School.

The video shows Spring Branch ISD Police Officer Juan Pedraza relying on his training and instincts to rescue a baby boy, approximately nine months in age, choking on a piece of plastic.

“You know, before the days of body cams these things were not well documented and you’d hear about them, but you didn’t see them and now you can see them,” said Baimbridge.

Pedraza is seen working relentlessly for minutes, ultimately dislodging the plastic in the boy’s throat after coming to the rescue.

“You don’t get a chance to call timeout. You don’t get a chance to get on your phone and say, ‘what do I do, the baby’s choking. You better know beforehand and you better take action right away, because every single second counts,” said Baimbridge.

Pedraza, who was honored for his heroics by the district last week, only recently moved to nights in order to spend more time with his own baby boy.

The change has already saved a life.
