Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is a religious holiday which combines the Death veneration rituals of Pre-Hispanic cultures with the Catholic practice. Based on the belief that the souls of the departed return to this world on that day, it is widely celebrated throughout Mexico. People gather while praying or joyfully eating, drinking, or parading in costumes through towns, to remember friends or family members who have died. Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2 in Mexico and around the world. It combines ancient Aztec customs with Catholic influences, honoring the deceased through celebration rather than mourning. Families create ofrendas (altars) with offerings such as food, sugar skulls, marigolds, and photos of their loved ones, welcoming their spirits back for a day of remembrance.

At Discovery Green, the tradition will be brought to life with family-friendly activities. Visitors can take part in hands-on art, watch artist demonstrations, and shop from local vendors. The event will feature live music from Houston’s own Nick Gaitan known for his mix of boleros, Tex-Mex, and Chicano soul.
