Houston rookie police officer relieved of duty following family violence arrest

HOUSTON – A Houston Probationary Police Officer who took the oath of office in August, has been relieved of duty following his arrest, according to the department.

Jonathan Torres is charged with assault of a family member and unlawful restraint. He was arrested on Tuesday, according to the Houston Police Department. The alleged crime happened while Torres was off-duty.

According to court documents, Torres is accused of closing a laptop on his wife’s hands, leaving visible injury and damage to the laptop. He then reportedly told her she was going to jail and put a handcuff on one of her wrists to “detain” her.

The documents say when the woman tried to leave the house, Torres shut the door on her and pulled on the handcuffs, causing her to fall and hurt her wrist. Torres then allegedly pinned her on the ground on her stomach. While she was yelling and screaming for help, Torres allegedly yelled at her to put her hands behind her back and threatened to tase her if she didn’t comply.

Torres has been booked into the Harris County Jail. A mugshot of him was not immediately available.
