Don’t be surprised at polls! Check to see if your name is on voter suspension list

No description found

HOUSTON – If you’re planning to vote in November, today is your last chance to register. You don’t want to show up at the polls and find out your name is on the suspended list!

In August, Governor Greg Abbott announced that over 460,000 Texans were placed on the suspended voter list.

But how does this happen? Typically, it’s due to an address issue, such as moving and failing to update your information.

Here’s how you can end up on the suspended list:

  • Unreturned Voter Registration Certificates: Every two years, counties mail out new voter registration certificates. If your certificate is returned due to a wrong address, you’ll be added to the list. These are sent out in January, so if you didn’t receive one, check your registration status.
  • National Change of Address Database: Counties annually compare voter data with the National Change of Address system. If you’re found to be registered in another county or state, you’ll be suspended.

Names remain on the suspended list through two federal elections before being purged. You have until October 7 to update your information in time for the November election.

How to Update Your Name and Address

  • If you still live in the same county where you’re registered, you can update your info online.
  • If you’ve moved to a new county, you’ll need to re-register with a printed Voter Registration Application.
  • Online changes must be submitted at least 30 days before the election.
