Post office pothole problems raising safety concerns, resulting in costly vehicle repairs

Potholes are plaguing a southwest Houston post office.

Folks who frequent the Almeda Station Post Office told KPRC 2 the potholes are resulting in costly repairs to their vehicles and safety concerns for those with difficulties walking.

“I had to fix my car, my wheel the other week just hitting these potholes which made it to where you couldn’t keep air in them,” post office visitor Gerald Conkridge said.

Conkridge said he also knows a few people that have been hurt.

“There’s been quite a few people that I know of, that have mentioned this place, they’ve had problems here by falling and so forth,” Conkridge said.

Dorthy White said it’s a big inconvenience for people with canes or wheelchairs.

“This Post Office don’t look like it’s managed to well or kept up to well,” White said.

The pothole problems have grabbed the attention of Congressman Al Green who represents the 9th Congressional District of Texas.

Green told KPRC 2 he requested a sit down with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to discuss the issues.

“Ultimately, the buck stops with Mr. DeJoy,” said Green.

At last Check, DeJoy hasn’t responded to Green’s request.

KPRC 2 also reached out to the U.S. Postal Service and obtained this response:

“The safety and well-being of both customers and employees is of the utmost importance to the Postal Service. We strive to ensure our facilities and grounds are maintained at a level that ensures safety and a pleasant customer experience. In this instance, local management has submitted work orders to make the necessary repairs to the parking lot located at the Almeda Post Office. We can report that some repairs have already been completed. The Postal Service remains focused on ensuring any remaining repairs are undertaken as soon as possible. However, until all repairs can be made, local postal officials urge customers to exercise caution and to be attentive to their surroundings. We appreciate our customers’ patience and apologize for any inconvenience.”
