HOUSTON, Texas – The Houston community is mourning the loss of a pregnant woman who was reportedly killed at the hands of her husband last week.

Christa Bauer Gilley, 38, was found dead last week after her husband, Lee Mongerson Gilley called police saying he found his wife unresponsive.

Lee told officers that his wife, Christa, had overdosed and he found her unresponsive, but hospital staff determined that was a lie when they found bruising and trauma on her face. Also, an autopsy report was conducted, which determined Christa died “due to compression of the neck,” or injuries consistent with strangulation.

Lee later admitted to lying about his wife being suicidal and taking drugs and admitted he and his wife had been arguing before he found her unresponsive.

Lee has since been charged with capital murder for both his wife and her unborn child.

Now, the community is coming together to celebrate the life of the beloved Heights woman.

The Houston Heights Association is holding a vigil on Tuesday, Oct. 15 in honor of Christa.

“Our Heights community is coming together to celebrate the life of Christa Bauer Gilley and offer support to her family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the Facebook post read, in part.

“Thank you for doing this. Her families in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Portland, Colorado, Florida and South Carolina, are in shock. She was a great soul and is already deeply missed,” Margie Bauer commented.

“Her loss is so shocking. She was an incredible mother, physical therapist and person. She will be deeply missed” Kate Cleveland commented.

“I’m very sad hearing about such a tragic loss. My condolences to her close knit family. I can’t imagine the heartbreak you are going through. My deepest sympathy to all… May she rest in peace,” Deanna Kasting commented.

“We are deeply saddened at this loss. May her friends and family find joy in her memory while grieving for the two lives taken so suddenly,” the Greater Heights Super Neighborhood commented.

The family released a statement:

“Christa’s family is devastated by her tragic death and the death of her unborn child. Christa was an amazing mother, full of love, and excited to welcome her third child. They were taken from this world needlessly and way too early. Christa’s family appreciates the outpouring from the community and hopes for justice for their daughter and their unborn grandchild. They are here to support Christa’s children and to focus on the memory of their daughter.”
