‘This year is better than last year’: Students at Fleming MS navigate high demands under HISD’s NES system

HOUSTON, Texas – Students at nearly half of Houston Independent School District’s campuses continue to face high demands under the district’s controversial New Education System.

Fleming Middle School, now in its second year under the system, is pushing students to grow academically, but many still feel the pressure of the fast-paced learning environment.

In classrooms at Fleming, the timer counts down, which urges students to work quickly to keep up with the system’s demanding schedule.

“It’s more strict,” says Traevon Narcisse, a Fleming student, describing the structured nature of the new system.

While the intensity is undeniable, many students at Fleming are noticing academic growth under the New Education System.

Several students said yes when asked whether they’re learning more compared to last year.

“Way more,” Traevon said. “I’m more focused on learning.” student, DeArthur Edwards, said. “I just got a hundred in reading.”

However, the pace continues to be a challenge for some students.

“I’d like more time,” said Damariya Stephen. “When that timer’s ticking, it feels like pressure.”

The time crunch has also affected how students interact with their teachers.

Chiniyah Williams said that while teachers are available for help, the time constraints make it difficult to get the full assistance needed.

“You can ask them, but you won’t get what you’re really asking for real, because of the time, " she said.

Despite these challenges, students like Chiniyah have begun to adapt. Last year, she expressed frustration with the constant countdown, but this year, she sees its benefits.

“The timers got better because they help you pick up the speed,” Chiniyah said.

While students are still adjusting to the fast pace, many are finding that the workload is becoming more manageable.

“Overall, I would say this year is better than last year,” Traevon concluded.

Fleming Middle School’s journey under the New Education System continues, with students, teachers, and community members navigating its demands and challenges.
