HOUSTON – With Thanksgiving just around the corner, local organization Families Helping Families is hard at work, preparing to provide 40 tons of food to families in need across the Houston area.
Founder Quincy Collins has been spearheading this effort for 11 years, but his mission to help others began long before that.
Collins first started feeding those in need when he was a child, inspired by his grandparents who would bring beef stew to feed people under the Uvalde Bridge in Houston. His passion for helping others grew over the years, eventually leading to the creation of the Houston organization.
Families Helping Families provides food and support for families, particularly in Fort Bend County and Alief.
This Year’s Goal: Feed 1,500 families
For 2024, the organization has set a goal of feeding 1,500 families with 40 tons of food, ensuring that families in need have enough for Thanksgiving. Collins shared that the organization has already begun its fundraising efforts to meet this goal and is well on its way.
One of the most memorable moments for Collins involved a family living in an abandoned apartment complex.
As he and his team delivered food, the grandchildren excitedly told their grandmother, “Mommy said somebody was bringing us food.”
This heartwarming story represents the impact that Families Helping Families continues to have in the community.
How to get involved
For those who want to contribute, whether through donations or by volunteering, Collins emphasized how every bit helps. With just $100, the organization can provide a family with enough food to last them a week, including their Thanksgiving dinner.
