HOUSTON – Damaging, stealing or vandalizing political campaign signs whether you agree with the candidate or not is a crime.
KPRC 2 has reported on the issue on numerous occasions and with the 2024 election just three weeks away emotions seem to be at an all-time high.
Melissa McDonough, a candidate for the 38th Congressional District of Texas, said she’s had to replace several of her signs.
“You’re talking three signs here, three signs there, and you’re having to go back constantly and redo those signs,” said McDonough.
McDonough said each signs costs about $30-$40 each but it’s not necessarily that money she’s worried about.
“It’s just silly, this is not what we need to be doing right now. We need to defend democracy, cast your vote, speak your voice,” she said.
McDonough told KPRC 2 she has notified law enforcement about the stolen signs.
Law enforcement said anyone caught damaging someone’s property can face a criminal mischief charge.
If you steal a sign, it could be a Class C misdemeanor, and penalties could range anywhere from a $500 to $2,000 fine.
