Residents of Conroe ask city to approve animal welfare bid

Concerned residents in Conroe are expected to speak at City Hall this afternoon to ask the city to move forward with a bid from animal welfare nonprofit, Texas Litter Control.

The organization presented a 2.5-million-dollar proposal that would include a Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) program for community cats (trap-neuter-release), an on-site low-cost wellness clinic for the public’s use, and would ensure access to 24/7 veterinary care for injured shelter animals.

All of this stems from a 3-month-old puppy that came into the shelter back in July with a severe leg injury. The dog was left without veterinary care for nearly three days and ended up chewing off his leg and was saved just in time by a private rescue that arranged for emergency surgery.

In the weeks following, Conroe Mayor Duke Coon requested an investigation into Care Corporation, the company contracted to oversee shelter animal care and veterinary services.

The investigation revealed long-term neglect and other violations, and the city terminated its contract with the company last month.

Now, the search is on for a replacement, and animal advocates in Conroe believe Texas Litter Control is the perfect answer. But as of right now, the city has said no to their proposal and is expected to explain why at today’s council meeting.
