It happened around 12:45 a.m. when police got a call on E. San Augustine St. off Sam Houston Tollway near Hwy 225. Lt. Chris Brown with Deer Park PD says 911 operators could hear a commotion in the background.

Once officers arrived at the scene, Lt. Brown said they saw a little girl running away from the apartment, followed by an unidentified man, believed to be the child’s stepfather, holding a gun.

Police told the man to put his gun down but Lt. Brown said he ignored their commands and was shot twice, once in the face, the other in the stomach.

The man was then rushed to an emergency hospital in serious condition. Lt. Brown said there were a total of two adults and two children in the apartment.
