HOUSTON – I don’t know what your Halloween tradition is, but for me, it’s watching scary movies—specifically classic ones to cross off my lengthy “must-see movies” list.

A recent survey by NoDepositRewards.org analyzed searches for 150 of the most popular Halloween movies over the course of a year and ranked them each by Texas’ average monthly search volume.

Its findings ranked “Beetlejuice” with the talented Michael Keaton as the title character, as Texas’ most searched-for Halloween movie. That’s about an average of 164,122 monthly searches—meaning it’s googled almost twice as much on average as any other Halloween movie in the state.

My favorite Halloween flick: “Scary Movie” starring Anna Farris, Marlon and Shawn Wayans, was ranked fourth among most searched-for. If you haven’t seen it (for whatever reason) it’s a parody of other horror movies—mainly “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” And yes, I’m ecstatic the Wayans Bros. are returning for a new movie. It’s long overdue!

Here’s a list of the top 5 Halloween movies Texans searched for:

  1. Beetlejuice (1988)
  2. Talk to Me (2022)
  3. Coraline (2009)
  4. Scary Movie (2000)
  5. Alien (1979)

Full disclosure: I don’t do well on jump-scares, so it’s a fun coincidence to know I’m not the only one who gravitates toward “Scary Movie” but according to Mason Jones from NoDepositRewards, there’s an explanation for it.

“While frightening horror titles become such a focus during the month of October, less intense, comedic films like Beetlejuice and Scary Movie remain popular across the country,” Jones said in a statement.

I am surprised “The Nightmare Before Christmas” didn’t make the top five, but either way, I’m curious how you all felt about the results.
