Baytown student says he was injured when bus driver pushed him off the bus to the curb

BAYTOWN, Texas – A school bus driver in Baytown is being investigated after a student says she pushed and kicked him off the bus onto the ground.

The student’s mother says he was injured in the process, and what the bus driver did afterwards made matters even worse.

The boy’s mom says she was so concerned after the incident at Victoria Walker Middle School that she rushed her son to the hospital to get x-rays. Fortunately, nothing was broken but she says she’s still upset and shocked, especially because this was all over a basketball.

“It made me feel mad and sad,” said 10-year-old Darrin Smith.

The bandage around his wrist is not part of a Halloween costume, but he says it is the result of a scary altercation.

“I hit the curb with my arm,” he said.

The 5th grader says his bus driver caused him to sprain his wrist Wednesday morning while dropping him off at school.

“When I got off the bus, I asked for the ball when everybody left. And then she had closed it and my backpack got stuck in the window. And then she opened it and I got into the bus and asked for my ball, and then she turned me around and pushed me off,” he said.

Darrin’s mother, Sherraine Jones says the situation got even more dangerous afterwards.

“He was knocking on the door, and she sped off as he was knocking on the door, so, how close is he to that door?” Jones said.

Jones says video of the incident she saw at the school backs up her son’s story.

“What really upset me is that when I did talk to him about it, he was more afraid of being in trouble not knowing that he had been assaulted,” she said.

She says she filed a police report with Goose Creek CISD police and now Child Protective Services is involved.

In a statement, Goose Creek CISD said the employee involved will not operate a bus until the investigation is concluded. Jones doesn’t think she should ever work around kids again.

“My concern is ok the school district is fine but there’s different states, there’s different areas in this world she can go and do the same thing to another child,” Jones said.

Goose Creek CISD says this is a confidential student matter and an ongoing investigation and the district will not be releasing the video to media.

Jones says she’s planning legal action.
