East Freeway closed for hours after motorcyclist hits SUV, killed by hit-and-run driver

HOUSTON – Authorities are looking into what caused a motorcyclist’s death overnight Friday on the East Freeway.

It happened around 12:45 a.m. when investigators said they shut down most of the freeway on Wayside. Preliminary details shared by Houston police are the unidentified motorcyclist, 64, was heading westbound on the East Freeway at Kress Street when he hit the back of an SUV.

Police said the SUV was towing another SUV and the crash caused debris that disabled a pickup truck. Meanwhile, the motorcyclist fell off his bike shortly after the crash and investigators say while he was lying in the roadway, another driver ran him over. That driver didn’t stop, but police said the first two drivers stayed at the scene to call 911.

The main lanes of East Freeway were shut down for hours while police surveyed the crime scene and crews cleaned up the wreckage.

Police are still searching for the hit-and-run driver and are asking for anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
