East Texas school bus carrying cheerleaders involved in crash on I-69 near SH-288

HOUSTON – A school bus from East Texas carrying high school cheerleaders was involved in a crash on I-69 near SH-288 Sunday.

The bus belonged to Lufkin ISD in East Texas. The district confirms 34 cheer students from Lufkin High School along with several adults were on the bus, which was headed to Rosenberg for a competition, when the crash occurred.

Eight vehicles in total were involved in the crash. The highway was shut down while law enforcement investigated the crash. It has since been reopened.

According to Lufkin ISD, three students were transported to the hospital for medical attention. Two of them have since been released and one continues to be held for observation.

In the district’s latest statement, all the students treated for medical attention were safely released.

“All students have been checked out, received medical attention, and have been released as of this evening.  Lufkin ISD would like to thank everyone for their well wishes, thoughts and prayers.”
