When they got there, officers found 42-year-old Julian Coronado dead in room 205, while a woman, identified as Brenda Burdick, was suffering from a gunshot wound in her abdomen.

Court documents say Orenday was found with a handgun in his front pocket and told officers he acted in self-defense.

Motel surveillance footage corroborated details from a woman who told investigators Orenday had been staying with her the previous night and refused to leave without money for a ride home.

When Coronado and Burdick arrived to help the woman, tensions escalated into the deadly shooting.

According to court documents, the witness recounted that Coronado confronted Orenday, prompting Orenday to draw his gun and fire multiple rounds.

Video footage shows Orenday firing from the doorway, striking Coronado, and then shooting Burdick as she tried to escape.

The footage also shows Orenday returning to the room, taking a black backpack, and rifling through Coronado’s wallet before leaving the scene.

Orenday is in the Harris County Jail on a $500,000 bond. His next court appearance is December 12.
