Longtime Houston Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee held the position from 1995 until her passing in July 2024 at the age of 74 from pancreatic cancer. Her daughter, Erica Lee Carter, won a special election to finish her mother’s congressional term, where she defeated two Republican challengers.

Jackson Lee’s children endorsed Turner, the former Houston mayor, to succeed their mother. In August, Turner emphasized his commitment to continuing Jackson Lee’s legacy of service and advocacy, while also providing stability during the transition.
