GALVESTON, Texas – The countdown begins at Moody Gardens for the Ice Land opening, but the work has been happening for months.
30 ice carvers from China started working in October. They are transforming two million pounds of ice into an interactive exhibit featuring a journey from the North Pole to the South Pole.
That journey includes animals from different climates, slides, tunnels, and even an ice-made bar with seating.
Moody Gardens’ public relations manager Evelyn Cole says her favorite is the polar bear because of the detail that went into it.
“The artistry is off the charts,” says Evelyn Cole.
If you plan on walking through, expect the temperature to be nothing like southeast Texas. When the ice carving team is working, they like the temperature to be around 15 degrees, but to preserve the ice, the room typically sits around nine degrees.

Moody Gardens keeps it so cold with the help of very large chillers.
“There are three 300-ton ice chillers that work to keep the temperature 9 degrees,” says Evelyn Cole.
Don’t worry! A ticket to Ice Land comes with a parka to keep you warm during viewing. Ice Land’s opening day is Nov. 23.
