Houston nonprofit offers free medical training, cosmetology licenses to domestic abuse survivors and new mothers

HOUSTONDomestic Violence Awareness Month may be over, but the mission of one Houston nonprofit remains unwavering. From Ordinary to Extraordinary, known as F.O.T.E., continues to empower survivors of domestic violence by providing them with skills to forge new career paths and brighter futures.

On Saturday, F.O.T.E. will celebrate a significant milestone, as 67 women who have overcome immense challenges will graduate from the nonprofit’s free skilled training program, earning certifications in either cosmetology or medical fields.

On Thursday, the women gathered at the F.O.T.E. beauty school, a space that had been transformed into a celebration of resilience. Tables were filled with colorful graduation caps adorned with flowers, glitter, rhinestones, and even tiny baby handprints, each cap representing the unique journey of a survivor.

“I’m excited, nervous, emotional, but it’s something I set myself to do—a goal I had so I can give my kids a better future,” shared graduate Elisa Granados.

Like many of the women in the program, Elisa is a domestic violence survivor who has faced both pain and perseverance. Her journey, like the decorated caps on the table, reflects resilience and the hope of new beginnings.

“I did go through an abusive relationship that resulted in me being a teen mom, and it has been one of my biggest blessings. We moved past the hurt because my son has been my biggest strength,” she said.

F.O.T.E. provides survivors with access to a range of training options, including cosmetology, barbering, medical, and dental certifications. Instructor Izel Cruz emphasized the program’s commitment to helping survivors restart their lives with practical skills and employment opportunities.

“We have the cosmetology school, we have the barber program, we have medical and dental, “Cruz explained, highlighting the variety of paths available to the graduates.

For Elisa, earning her cosmetology license represents the start of a dream—but with a twist.

“What I thought was going to be a girly salon to cater to women, it might have to be with men’s services,” she said. “Because I find it more pleasing. I guess because they light up too.”

Many of the graduates already have job offers lined up, a testament to their hard work and the comprehensive training they received at F.O.T.E. The nonprofit will also acknowledge its newest students and staff members who recently completed the organization’s apprenticeship program, presenting them with U.S. Department of Labor-endorsed Certificates of Completion.

“To me, it’s going to be a prideful moment to look at everyone and be able to say, ‘I did it,’ Elisa added, reflecting on the significance of Saturday’s graduation.

It will be a day to honor not only the women’s achievements but the strength and determination that brought them to this new chapter.
