BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas – A heartfelt story of compassion and reunion unfolded around a dog named Penny.
Penny, a beloved pet, escaped and ended up at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Brazoria County where she was adopted by a new family hoping to bring joy to their young child.

Two weeks later, however, they learned that Penny’s original owner, Julie Ann, had been desperately searching for her.
The family had already grown attached and fell in love with Penny, but after learning of Julie Ann’s search, they made the selfless decision to reach out on Facebook and arrange Penny’s return.
Julie Ann was stunned by their kindness and moved to tears.
“They did that from the bottom of their hearts without anyone forcing them,” she said. “It felt really good to know there are still good people out there.”
The family planned the reunion to take place while their child was away, hoping to spare them the pain of saying goodbye.
At the handover, the family expressed how difficult the decision was, sharing, “It broke our hearts more, knowing that we might be breaking our child’s heart too.”
Julie Ann was also dealing with emotions at the meetup. She was holding back tears when she reconnected with Penny. Julie Ann felt the depth of the family’s sacrifice and empathized with them as they parted with Penny, who had become so dear to them.
According to Julie, “It was bittersweet because I felt bad for [the family] because [Penny] is a very lovable dog... she’s a very hard dog to not want to give up.”
Julie Ann felt compassion for the family, hugged them, and thanked them.
She expressed gratitude to KPRC 2, whose coverage had helped reconnect her with Penny by prompting the SPCA to reach out to the adoptive family.
“It took me contacting [KPRC 2] before [SPCA of Brazoria County] even agreed to reach out to the adopter.” Julie Ann said.
The family who adopted Penny and returned her to Julie Ann still doesn’t have a dog and is looking for one for their young child.
KPRC 2 is staying in touch with the family and will provide updates as soon as they find a new dog to welcome into their home.
