In an inspiring show of community support, former Army Sergeant Lonnie McCaskill and her family received much-needed repairs to their minivan, thanks to KPRC 2′s Bill Spencer, the Spencer Solves It team and Christian Brothers Automotive.
McCaskill, a veteran and mother of four, faced financial hardship after a collision left her family’s only means of transportation unsafe and in dire need of extensive repairs.
Last year, a red-light-running driver collided with McCaskill’s previous van, injuring her husband and leaving the family without reliable transportation. The impact was severe enough to sideline her husband from work for several months. With mounting expenses and regular medical appointments for their children, including a three-year-old recently diagnosed with autism, the family found themselves in a precarious situation.
“The van was very dangerous,” said McCaskill, noting the risks posed by its deteriorating steering system. “It’s me and my kids in the car. You know, it’s also dangerous for other drivers.” As McCaskill is about to begin training at the Houston Police Academy, her ability to safely commute was essential.
The repair bill, estimated at around $15,000, covered a range of critical replacements, from wheel axles to the entire rack-and-pinion steering system. Mechanic Pierce Larsen from Christian Brothers Automotive explained, “It’s not something I would have wanted my family to be in,” referring to the van’s former condition.
The Spencer Solves It team ensured the vehicle was road-ready and safe by replacing components including the brakes, engine mounts, and air conditioning system.
On delivery day, the McCaskill family celebrated as they inspected their now-reliable vehicle, with cold air blowing from the A/C and a renewed sense of safety. “Does that look brand new or what?” McCaskill laughed as she embraced Spencer Solves It team members, expressing her gratitude.
This heartwarming story is a reminder of the difference a community can make, one repair at a time.
