Houston Muslims to hold grand opening Saturday for Spanish-speaking Islamic education, community center in Alief

The center also serves as a youth community space and mosque while also highlighting the Latino/Hispanic historical connection to Islam

HOUSTON – A newly opened Islamic education and community center in Alief will officially be opening its doors to the public this weekend for a grand opening ceremony.

Spanish-speaking Muslims are not new, especially in Houston, but chances are you might not know too many. That’s why this center looks to highlight the historical connections between Islam and Spanish speakers by creating accessible materials for people to understand what led them on their soul-searching journey.

Centro Islamico, where the grand opening will be held, is located on Brant Road under the Alief water tower.

The event will be held from 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and remarks by District F Council Member Tiffani Thomas. During her remarks, Thomas will present a proclamation on behalf of the City of Houston to recognize this historic occasion.

Dozens of other dignitaries are expected to attend, like Asst. Chief Yasar Bashir of the Houston Police Department, and other international leaders along with Latino Muslim officials, who grew up in Alief before they embraced Islam.

“The IslamInSpanish Centro Islámico represents more than a building—it’s the realization of a vision to transform lives,” Co-Founder Jaime “Mujahid” Fletcher said in a news release statement. “Though our voices have been heard on mainstream media nationally and globally, our aim has always been to see lives transformed into productive global citizens collaborating for the common good of humanity.”
