The couple received their marriage license back on October 30. Judge Mike Engelhart recently signed the license during a ‘paper wedding’, making them legally married in Texas.

The ceremony was intentionally low-key, with no vows or rings exchanged. A small group of friends gathered for what the Hildago described as “the part of the marriage akin to a contract.”

Mayor Whitmire’s deleted comment draws attention

But before the ceremony, the couple made headlines for a different reason. Houston Mayor John Whitmire posted a now-deleted comment on social media about Hidalgo’s now-husband, David. The comment read “Wonderful. He sure looks like a nerd.”

Whitmire’s team explained that it was all in good fun, and he had no bad intentions. The mayor wished the couple well and moved on.

Hidalgo told KPRC 2, “Whether or not he meant it in jest or meant for it to be posted publicly, he did the right thing by deleting it. Although truth be told, both David and I are nerds. And I can’t wait to marry him.”

Couple plans destination wedding for December

Although they just married legally, Hildago has plans for a bigger celebration on December 1, with a formal wedding abroad.

For now, they’re soaking in the joy of this exciting new chapter together.
