Driver arrested after causing crash on Katy Freeway that killed Pct. 5 deputy, her daughter

The freeways was shut down for nearly 7 hours

HOUSTON – The driver police say crashed into a Harris County Precinct 5 Deputy Constable on the Katy Freeway near 6-10 Friday morning, killing them both, has since been arrested and facing charges.

Houston police said the driver of the car that caused the collision is now in custody after it was determined he was impaired.

Friday night, the suspected driver was identified as Omar Jose Alvarado. He has been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter.

The deputy constable who was killed and her daughter have been identified as Katherine Hutson and Kacey.

What happened

The crash involved a stationary truck, a gray Mazda 3, and a white Chevrolet Impala.

Police said the Mazda 3 crashed into the Impala—which had its hazard lights on—causing that vehicle to crash into the truck, which was left engulfed in flames from the impact of the crash.

Police said the 46-year-old deputy constable and her 8-year-old daughter, Kacey, were killed inside the white vehicle.

Other injuries

The Mazda 3 had two occupants—a driver and a passenger. Police said the passenger of the Mazda 3 was transported to the hospital for evaluation, while the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The worker was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out.

Houston police were working the scene when Pct. 5 deputies showed up to the scene to identify the victim.

Sky 2 aerials showed the deputies lined up as they prepared to take Hutson and Kacey’s bodies to the medical examiner’s office.
