Neighbors stop fire after Heights woman is shot on her porch

A shooting and a suspicious house fire are under investigation in the Houston Heights area after a woman was injured and an outdoor decoration was reportedly set ablaze Sunday night.

The incident happened just before 10 p.m. Sunday at a home on Oxford Street near East 10 1/2 Street.

Authorities say officers were responding to reports of a shooting when they learned that someone had intentionally set fire to a 3-foot doll, which was on the porch of the home.

Neighbors managed to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived.

The woman, who had suffered a gunshot wound to the torso, was rushed to a nearby trauma center for treatment. Officials say she is expected to survive.

According to neighbors, such incidents are rare in the normally quiet community.

Witnesses reported hearing five to seven gunshots before the fire broke out.

Police have not yet identified a suspect or released any details about a potential motive.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
