HOUSTON, Texas – KPRC 2 News earned its first Lone Star Emmy for TAKEOVER. This original documentary specifically chronicles the Texas Education Agency’s takeover of the Houston Independent School District (HISD).
The documentary, part of KPRC’s ongoing Focus on Fleming initiative, examines the statewide implications of the TEA’s intervention in one of the nation’s largest school districts. Through in-depth reporting, the project captured the human impact of the takeover, spotlighting students, teachers, and families at Fleming Middle School as they navigated this significant shift.

During this approach, our goal was to provide viewers with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities presented by the TEA’s decision to appoint superintendent Mike Miles.
KPRC 2 anchor Candace Burns, Photojournalist Wladimir Moquete, and Digital Content Specialist Ninfa Saavedra spent a year inside of Fleming Middle School telling the stories of the students, parents faculty and staff.
