Nearly three months after the tragic death of Ricardo “Ricky” Resendez Jr. in a wrong-way crash, his family is holding a press conference calling for charges to be filed against the off-duty deputy constable involved.
The Resendez family expressed frustration over the three-month delay in filing charges against the former deputy constable, identified as Rigo Vivar.
They ask that the Harris County District Attorney’s Office and Houston Police Department expedite the case and hold Vivar accountable.
“Ricky was a son, a brother, and a dog dad with the kindest soul,” the family said in a statement. “We are here to remind the DA and HPD that his life mattered, and justice must be served.”
KPRC 2 will livestream the press conference in this article at 11 a.m.
What happened?
The crash happened on Aug. 24 in Houston’s Second Ward. According to police, Vivar was driving his personal vehicle southbound in the northbound lanes of Canal Street when he struck Resendez’s vehicle, killing him at the scene. Vivar sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
The Harris County Precinct 6 Constable’s Office confirmed Vivar’s involvement in the crash and terminated his employment shortly after.
However, no charges have been filed against him, leaving the Resendez family and their supporters seeking answers.
The family highlighted Ricky’s role as a protector and beacon of light within their family, emphasizing the loss felt by all who knew him.
His sister, Brenda Resendez, spoke at a previous press conference, sharing the emotional toll of her brother’s absence.
“At night and early in the morning is when I feel his absence the most,” Brenda said. “We want charges filed. We want justice for Ricky.”
Supporters are also pressing for accountability in law enforcement, pointing to Vivar’s alleged history of professional misconduct.
