Capital murder charge filed in 2021 death of Houston man burned and stabbed

A Houston man accused of stabbing, burning, and killing Jesus Salgado in 2021 has been charged with capital murder, court records show.

Jose Ivan Mendoza, 37, now faces a capital murder charge as investigators allege he burned Salgado, stabbed him with a sharp object, and beat him while attempting to kidnap him.

Mendoza is expected to appear in court on Dec. 3.

What happened?

On June 7, 2021, Houston police responded to a call at 1900 Dorsett Street, where witnesses found Salgado, 49, severely burned and suffering from stab wounds.

According to investigators, a witness saw Salgado in a grassy area with another man when a fire broke out. The witness extinguished the flames and called 911 as the suspect fled on foot.

Salgado was transported to the hospital with burns covering most of his body and stab wounds to his abdomen. He succumbed to his injuries on June 15, 2021.

In August 2021, Mendoza and another suspect, Manuel Mendoza Perales, were arrested and initially charged with murder.

Mendoza Perales, 34, was apprehended in Brighton, Colorado, through a joint effort with the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force.
