The family of Kendrick Fisher, the man accused of killing his sister, Genene, and her two-year-old daughter, Karlie, claims that the tragic deaths could have been avoided. Fisher, who is facing charges of capital murder, allegedly stabbed both victims at their West Houston apartment last week.
Genene was a devoted mother, daughter, and sister, and her life was centered around her daughter, Karlie, with whom she shared an unbreakable bond. Karlie, full of life and curiosity, touched everyone she met with her infectious laughter and bright spirit.
Joanna Fisher, Kendrick’s mother, spoke out about the family’s efforts to get him mental health treatment before the fatal incident. She says that they repeatedly reached out to law enforcement, hoping to get him admitted to a mental institution due to his mental health struggles.
“Nobody helped us,” Fisher said. She recalled a disturbing altercation with Kendrick, where she became worried about his behavior, believing it was a sign of deeper mental health issues.
Fisher claims on November 24th her son tried to attack her, which hadn’t happened before. She said later in the day she filed a report with police.
HPD confirms the family did file a report with them. A spokesperson with HPD told KPRC 2’s Rilwan Balogun, since no one was charged during the incident they can’t reveal the identity of the suspect. However, the family said it was Kendrick. They shared with Balogun a copy of the report. The family called police after Kendrick attempted to steal money, leading into an altercation. The family told police Kendrick made threats against his mother. She said he struck her and caused destruction at the residence until someone pushed him out of the home.
The spokesperson also said an officer responded to the Richmond Avenue apartment complex hours before making the gruesome discovery after someone called to report a disturbance. Police said no one answered to an officer at the door or their repeated phone calls.
Joanna explained that, hours before the killings, Genene had called police, warning them to “kick in the door” rather than knocking. She believed this action could have prevented the situation from escalating.
Kendrick Fisher remains in Harris County Jail, where he is scheduled for a court appearance tomorrow. His family is grappling with the loss of their loved ones and the unanswered questions surrounding the tragic events. A memorial balloon release is planned for Friday night to honor the lives of Genene and Karlie.
The investigation into the deaths is ongoing.
Kendrick Fisher is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, December 4th.
