Szczesniak began by addressing the elephant in the room at the State of the Airports.

“Yes, construction has earned us a bit of a reputation,” Szczesniak said.

With nearly $5 billion in construction projects aimed at improving infrastructure, sustainability, and passenger experience, Houston’s airports are in the midst of a significant transformation.

Key developments include:

  • Expanded International Connections: New nonstop routes have been added, including flights to Georgetown, Guyana, and Medellin, Colombia, with upcoming services to Tokyo and Edmonton, Canada.
  • Terminal Improvements: At George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), the newly opened Terminal D West offers six gates for wide-body aircraft. The ongoing construction of a state-of-the-art international terminal will feature 17 TSA screening lanes with advanced technology.
  • Enhanced Parking Systems: A new cashless parking system at IAH allows for faster entry and exit using license plate recognition. Travelers can also reserve spots online for added convenience and cost savings.

Additional updates include:

  • Local Dining Options: Hobby Airport (HOU) is expanding its culinary offerings with notable names like Killen’s BBQ and Velvet Taco joining its lineup. They will also feature Simone Biles' Taste of Gold restaurant.

  • Art Installations: Both airports are incorporating large-scale artwork, including pieces by Houston artists and a glass installation by Dale Chihuly.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Energy-efficient lighting, along with exploration of renewable energy options like hydrogen fuel, are part of efforts to reduce the airports’ environmental impact.

These upgrades are part of Houston Airports' commitment to improving functionality, efficiency, and passenger satisfaction, ensuring the facilities meet the demands of growing air travel.
