Two in critical condition after propane truck slams into stopped traffic near Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Texas – Two people are in critical condition following an accident that involved two trucks being sandwiched between two 18-wheelers on Highway 321 east of Cleveland on Friday.

Deputies say a Pinnacle 18-wheeler loaded with propane failed to slow down and struck its brakes just 100 feet from the stopped traffic.

That tanker hit two pickup trucks, sandwiching them between another 18-wheeler directly in front. Both 18-wheelers were hauling hazardous materials, but neither sustained damage to their tanks.

Injuries Reported

Two occupants from the silver Dodge pickup were airlifted to the hospital in critical condition by HCA Air Life, while another adult and child from the same vehicle were transported by ground in stable condition.

The driver of the Ford F-150, owned by Kinder Morgan, sustained an elbow injury and was also taken to the hospital.

Emergency Response

State Highway 321 was closed between the Highway 105 bypass and the SH 105/SH 321 intersection in Tarkington until 4 p.m.

Firefighters from Tarkington VFD, along with Engine 43, Ladder 42, and Squad 42 units, responded to the scene.

Investigation Underway

Harris County Hazmat was called in to inspect the 18-wheeler tanks. DPS, along with support from Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, Pct. 5 & 6 Constables Offices, and Cleveland Police Department, are investigating the incident further.
