Airbnb rolls out anti-part technology ahead of New Years Eve

Airbnb said it is rolling out its anti-party technology ahead of the end of the year throughout the US. It is aimed to help reduce unauthorized and disruptive parties over the weekend and the days leading up and over New Years Eve.

The technology will work by using machine learning to identify and block potentially higher-risk bookings of entire home listings from being made. Airbnb said the goal is to promote positive travel and hosting on the platform. This defense keeps tabs on the length of the trip, the type of listing and how far the listing is from the guest’s location, according to Airbnb.

If Airbnb determines the booking is high risk, the guest will either be blocked from the booking or redirected to alternative accommodations on the platform.

KPRC 2 spoke with a host who says he has noticed the Airbnb anti party technology work in the past.

“Occasionally, a guest will reach out to us and say that Airbnb is not letting them book my place and what we find is that they meet certain criteria that Airbnb includes in their algorithm that falls under what we like to call the party house rule.

‘From what we’ve seen, it tends to be younger guests who are booking an entire space, like an entire house, on fairly short notice like less than two weeks. Often times around major holidays in the local area where they live,” Freeman said.

Airbnb said the platform had success with the technology last New Years in Houston. It said Airbnb was able to deter 900 people from entire home listings on the app.
