A late-night family altercation on Houston’s south side has ended with a 32-year-old man being hospitalized after his father shot him in the leg in what police are calling a self-defense situation.

The incident happened around 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday at a home on Arbor Street. Police reported that the father, a man in his 70s, was watching TV when his 32-year-old son, who had been drinking, became increasingly belligerent.

The son reportedly made threats, including saying, “I’m going to put you under.”

He then escalated the situation by breaking a mirror and attempting to harm the family dog. When the son charged toward his father, the father fired a warning shot.

However, the son continued advancing, prompting the father to shoot him in the leg.

Emergency responders transported the son to the hospital, where he is expected to recover from his injuries.

The father, detained for questioning, cooperated fully with the police.

Police said the son has a history of violence against his father, including an incident where the son allegedly broke his father’s arm.
