Anime bites and cosplay delights: Houston’s Otaku Food Festival awaits!

Houston, TXAnime fans and foodies, get ready! The highly anticipated Otaku Food Festival is coming to Houston this weekend, bringing with it an unforgettable experience for attendees of all ages.

This free two-day event is set to take place at Karbach Brewery.

“You get free anime, free entertainment and so it’s a very good family event,” said Vincent Tran, Otaku Food Festival Organizer. “People [will] get great food... [and] a lot of good merch.”

What to expect:

The Otaku Food Festival is packed with exciting activities and offerings. Here’s a taste of what’s in store:

  • Over 100 food and drink vendors: Celebrating Asia’s rich culinary diversity, the festival offers Filipino delicacies, Japanese street food, Thai dishes, Taiwanese boba tea, noodles, baos, Vietnamese grilled chicken, egg rolls, and more!

  • Cosplay and anime merchandise: Dress up as your favorite anime character for a chance to win the cosplay contest, or explore exclusive merchandise you won’t find anywhere else!

  • Sumo wrestling matches: Witness live sumo wrestling and experience a piece of traditional Japanese culture right here in Houston. Dive deeper into the history of sumo and even step into the ring to try sumo wrestling yourself!

  • Voice actors and photo ops: Meet popular voice actors from the anime world, snap a photo to capture the moment, and even get their autographs!
  • Live entertainment: Enjoy a variety of performances of K-Pop, from cultural demonstrations to live music, and even a chance to showcase your vocal talents with karaoke!

Vincent, reflecting on his childhood in Vietnam, shared, “You can see the food being made and... have a variety [of food] on both sides [of the street].”

He expressed his desire for others to experience the charm of “good cheap street food.”

Is cosplay encouraged?

Dressing up is not required, but it’s highly encouraged. Organizers say cosplay adds to the vibrant and creative atmosphere of the festival.

Plus, there will be a cosplay contest open to all ages—simply sign up when you arrive for your chance to shine and show off your costume!

  • The event and parking are free, but parking spaces fill up quickly—consider taking an Uber or rideshare to make your visit hassle-free!
