Several families displaced after fire tears through Southwest Houston apartment complex

SOUTHWEST HOUSTON – Several people are without a home after a fire destroyed several apartment units in Southwest Houston.

The Houston Fire Department responded to the fire at the Ridge Point Apartments on Westridge Street and South Main Street around 4:15 Saturday morning. It quickly escalated into a 2-alarm fire, where extra crews had to be called in.

Fighters were able to contain the fire to one building about two hours later. They say four to six units were destroyed.

Several people also needed help getting out of their home when the fire broke out.

Joseph Harvey, a resident at the complex, jumped into action when he saw his neighbor hanging from her balcony.

“It was scary and instantly, you know, I was recording and when I heard a voice screaming, I just dropped the phone and we rushed over there. We helped her,” says Harvey.

Investigators say one person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Their condition is unknown.

“There were a couple people who needed assistance, but with the commitment of our firefighters, they were able to assist them with evacuation,” says HFD Asst. Fire Chief Michael Mire.

HFD says the American Red Cross is helping people impacted.

It’s still unclear what caused the fire.

This is a developing story. More details will be added as more information becomes available.
