A Life of Service

Jimmy Carter, born October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, served as a naval officer before entering politics. After his father died in 1953, Carter returned to Georgia to manage the family farm and quickly became a community leader. He rose to national prominence as governor of Georgia in 1971 and later as president in 1976.

Carter’s post-presidency years were defined by his humanitarian work with Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Center, focusing on global health, democracy, and peace.
