It’s no secret. The New Year’s holiday is a big drinking holiday.

If you plan on partaking in the party, having the best time takes a backseat when it comes to making sure you get home safely.

How to get home New Year’s Eve

There are several ways that you can get to and from your plans to ring in the new year. Psst! Some are even free!

METRO wants you to leave the driving to them on New Year’s Eve.

To promote safe travel during New Year’s Eve, METRO is offering free rides starting from 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve until 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day. This applies to all Local Bus, METRORail, METRORapid, and METROLift services. It’s an excellent initiative aimed at reducing drunk driving and ensuring that everyone can celebrate responsibly.

Z-Trip partners with HCSO?

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with Responsibility.org and zTrip to help ensure New Year’s Eve celebrations are safe and tragedy-free.

If you plan to drink, the sheriff’s office urges you to arrange a safe ride home. To support this effort, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office are offering a $15 discount on zTrip rides from noon on Dec. 31 to 6 a.m. on Jan. 1.

To claim the discount, riders can use the promo code HCSONYE when booking a ride through the zTrip app. It’s important to act quickly, as the promo codes are available on a first-come, first-served basis for up to $5,000 in total discounts.

Drinking and driving can have real consequences

Recent reports indicate that in 2023 in the Houston area—which includes Harris, Waller, Fort Bend, Brazoria, Montgomery, and Galveston counties—approximately 4,665 DUI-related traffic crashes involving alcohol were reported. These incidents resulted in numerous fatalities and serious injuries. In response, local law enforcement has intensified efforts to combat impaired driving during this time.

Each and every crash impacts a family, many of which have lost a loved one.
