HOUSTON – The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center reports that 2024 ranks as the second-highest year for tornadoes on record.

While surveys for December 28 are still ongoing, at least 1,735 tornadoes have been confirmed across the year. This places 2024 just behind 2004, which holds the top spot with 1,817 tornadoes.
A recently released NWS chart highlights the top five tornado years over the last 21 years. Advances in technology and easier access to reporting have led to more accurate documentation of weaker tornadoes compared to earlier years.
Notably, 2024 recorded the highest number of EF-2+ and EF-3+ tornadoes since 2011, underscoring the intensity of this year’s storms.
In the Houston area, the NWS has confirmed at least 11 tornadoes in just three days in December 2024.
