HOUSTON – Authorities are investigating a deadly crash Wednesday morning, causing a total closure on Southwest Freeway in west Houston.
CHECK HERE FOR MORE TRAFFIC CONDITIONS
It happened just before 2:30 a.m. on the southbound 59 freeway over Shepherd, where one person died and another person was found on the sidewalk below the freeway.
Our KPRC 2 reporter, Brittany Jeffers saw the medical examiner on scene and several investigators out there. We have learned three vehicles were involved — and police say this was a bit of a chain reaction, where an initial car crashed.
That driver showed signs of impairment and hit a barrier before getting out of the car and jumping off the freeway. At last check, they were in serious condition and unresponsive.
Investigators said a second driver didn’t see the disabled car before they crashed into it. Two people were trapped inside of the vehicles and rushed to a hospital but are expected to be OK.
A third vehicle then crashed into the second car. Police said the only person in that vehicle was a driver, who died as a result of the crash.
The freeway has since reopened after it was closed for several hours while officials worked to clean up the wreckage and investigate the incident.
